What you need to consider when booking for a little one.
Infants born prematurely require medical clearance to fly. They require this clearance up to the age of 6 months, plus the number of days that they were born prematurely. An infant is considered premature if they were born 3 weeks or more before their original due delivery date.
Passengers with premature infants are required to provide a minimum of 48 hours’ notice of their intention to travel. Please contact our special assistance department for more information, our staff will be happy to help you.
Infants aged 0-5 months old must sit on an adult’s knee and be restrained by an infant loop belt. A flat rate of €25/£25 or equivalent (excluding taxes and charges where applicable) per one-way flight on all European routes or 10% of the adult fare on flights from/to North America will apply.
Aer Lingus don’t have a restriction on a minimum age that the infant should be, however we do recommend that you clear with your doctor that it's okay for an infant up to the age of two weeks to travel.
One adult can’t be responsible for more than two infants. Where one adult is travelling with two infants, at least one of the infants must be over six months old and accommodated in a car type safety seat. If both infants are under six months old, they must be accompanied by an additional responsible adult.
Infants aren’t permitted to occupy exit rows or the rows immediately before or after an emergency exit row.

If you make a booking with us for your unborn infant using the infant's surname and 'Baby' as the 'First Name', there’ll be no charge to subsequently change the name to the correct infant's name after the birth. However, if the itinerary includes travel on one of our codeshare or interline partners, we’ll be unable to perform a name change. You may also contact us to add an infant to an existing booking that was made before the birth.
If you wish to add an infant to an existing booking, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help you by arranging to take a payment and issue a ticket for your baby.
Aer Lingus Regional (Flight Nos 3000-3999 operated by Emerald Airlines)
Infants under the age of two years may travel provided that they sit on an adult's lap (one infant per adult) while using an infant loop belt, and a fee is charged per flight.
No baby/car seats are allowed in the cabin of the aircraft.
A maximum of eight infants only to be carried on board the aircraft for each flight.
An AMSAFE CARES Harness that is supplied by you may be used for securing children and children with disabilities. Please contact our special assistance department if use of a harness is required.
If your infant reaches the age of two years prior to the return journey, the applicable fare, taxes, fees and charges for that part of the journey will apply.
Infants between six months and two years old can sit on an adult’s knee provided that they use an infant loop belt. Car type safety seats may be used by children aged more than six months and less than 36 months. In order to accommodate a child aged 36 months or older in a car seat, the child must be within the size and weight limits for that seat and special Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) approval is required. Please contact our special assistance department as soon as possible in advance of the flight.
You may buy a seat for the infant at the appropriate fare where the infant can sit in an approved, forward facing car seat provided by you. The car seat must be restrained on the aircraft seat by the normal aircraft lap strap. Aer Lingus don’t permit rearward facing car seats. The seat must be a purpose-designed children's car seat with a 5-point harness, and must be of a type approved for use in motor vehicles and aircraft and bearing labels to this effect:
USA
  • The car seat must display a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) sticker with the words "Certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft".
European
  • The car seat must display a CE sticker, with the words "Certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft".
  • In order to ensure the car seat will fit into the aircraft seat, please ensure the seat width doesn't exceed 17 inches (430mm).
  • Infants aren't permitted to occupy exit rows or the rows immediately before or after an emergency exit row.

If an infant is over two years of age for any part of the journey, a seat must be bought for them. Alternatively, you can make two separate bookings – one for the outbound and one for the return flight.
On transatlantic flights, we offer a discount for passengers between the ages of two and eleven travelling in economy class. Please check your price quoted in the trip summary during your booking for full details.
If you are travelling with a passenger aged 12 to 15 years, they should be booked online as "Young Adults".
There are specific rules and regulations for young adults aged 12 and over travelling alone, and in some cases this is not possible. Find out more about unaccompanied young passengers.
