Carry-on Baggage

Before you start packing your carry-on baggage, it’s important to understand your options and know what your size and weight limits are.

Applicable on Aer Lingus flights within Europe

 

We offer two different ways to bring your 10kg bag on your journey.

If you would like to take a 10kg bag on board with you and your booking does not include it, you must book a "10kg carry-on bag" online from €9.99/£9.99. Alternatively, drop your bag off at the check-in desk or bag drop kiosk (available in Dublin, Shannon and London) when check-in opens and collect it again at the bag carousel when you land. This option is free.

If your booking includes a carry-on bag, you must take this bag on board with you (please see below for details).

A small personal item (handbag or laptop bag) is still included for all customers.

If you bring your 10kg bag to the boarding gate and have not purchased a 10kg Carry-on bag or it is not included in your booking, you will be charged a €35 fee to place this bag in the aircraft hold. Payment of this fee will be processed using your smartphone via QR code with our partner Global Payments, and will be verified by our boarding agents.

When is a 10kg carry-on bag included?

 

Some customers will have a 10kg carry-on bag included in their booking, please see the list below. If a 10kg bag is included, you must take this on board with you. You will not be permitted to drop this bag off at check-in.

  • AerClub - Silver, Platinum and Concierge AerClub members. (Members only, not travelling companions.)
  • Fare Types - All Plus, Advantage, AerSpace and Economy fares purchased via British Airways. (Not included in Saver fares.)
  • Infants - Accompanying adult travelling with an infant.
  • Connections - Customers connecting to/from an Aer Lingus transatlantic flight or a connecting flight with an interline partner.
  • Aer Credit Card - Customers who are travelling using their Travel Reward flights to Europe.

Please remember to pack your 10kg bag appropriately, e.g. with no liquids over 100ml.

All customers with a carry-on bag (either purchased or included) must check in online or via the App.

Travelling on an Aer Lingus Regional flight?

(Flights operated by Emerald Airlines with flight numbers in the range EI 3000 - EI 3999)

 

There is a 7kg limit per passenger for carry-on baggage, which must be stored in the overhead locker on Aer Lingus Regional flights (operated by Emerald Airlines), subject to availability. A small personal item (handbag or laptop bag) is also included and must be stowed under the seat in front of you. The maximum dimensions for carry-on baggage for all Aer Lingus Regional flights are 48 x 33 x 20cm (as per diagram below).
If you're connecting to/from an Aer Lingus Regional flight to an Aer Lingus transatlantic flight, the 7kg (15lb) carry-on baggage allowance will apply for both parts of the journey.
You can find out if your flight is operated by Emerald Airlines in your booking confirmation email or in the flight details when making your booking.

If you are flying on an Aer Lingus Regional flight and your carry-on baggage weighs more than 7kg and/or is larger than the specified maximum dimensions, Height: 48cm (18.5") Width: 33cm (13") and Depth: 20cm (8"), you will be charged a €35/£35 fee to place this bag in the hold. Payment of this fee will be processed using your smartphone via a QR code, with our partner Global Payments and will be verified by our boarding agents.

 

Travelling on a transatlantic flight?

 

The 10kg carry-on bag policy remains unchanged on transatlantic flights where you can bring the bag on board and store it in the overheard locker. A small personal item (handbag or laptop bag) is also included and must be stowed under the seat in front of you.
If you're connecting to/from an Aer Lingus transatlantic flight to an Aer Lingus Regional flight, the 7kg (15lb) carry-on baggage allowance will apply for both parts of the journey.

    Please ensure your carry-on baggage is within the specified allowance. It must fit inside the gauge units at the airport (including wheels and handles). Bags outside of this allowance must be checked in and the relevant bag fee will apply. The pooling of carry-on baggage when checked is not permitted.

    Know what you can and can’t bring

    Your small personal item, carried with you on board free of charge, must be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you. If you are travelling with a laptop, this should be carried in a laptop bag (or equivalent) as your small personal item.
    Essential items, such as personal medication, money, passports and other identification documents should be packed in your carry-on baggage and not in checked baggage.
    Some commonly queried items that are fine to take on board are wedding dresses, wedding cakes, power tools, crystal and toolboxes.

    As directed by the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA), if you are flying to the US, there is a limit on the quantity of powder substances (e.g. flour, sugar, coffee, spices, powdered milk or cosmetics) you may take in your carry-on baggage. Customers who wish to take more than 350g/350ml/12oz of powder substances to the US, must pack them into their checked baggage.
    Flights departing the US are subject to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) rules.

    Important notes about bringing your bag on board

    • If you're seated in row 1 (economy or business class) or at an emergency exit, you must store your baggage in an overhead locker.
    • You must be able to place your own carry-on baggage into the overhead locker without assistance.
    • We ask that you please stow small personal items under the seat in front of you, keeping the overhead space free for 10kg/7kg carry-on bags.
    • Loose items must be stowed securely for take off and landing as directed by the cabin crew.
    • Occasionally we may have to check your carry-on baggage into the hold due to stowage space limitations.
    • Recent changes to European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) regulations state that Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs) (e.g. mobile phones, tablet devices, e-readers, MP3 players) no longer have to be switched to 'OFF' during take-off and landing.
    • It's now acceptable to use these devices during all phases of flight (except during refuelling and low visibility landings) once they've been switched to 'flight/airplane mode'.
    • Laptops and larger PEDs (greater than 1kg in weight, or which can't be held in one hand) shall be stowed during taxi, take-off and landing, or at any other time if requested by cabin crew.
    • Devices must not obstruct passenger exit from a seat row in the event of an emergency.
    • Note: Aer Lingus A330 aircraft are Wi-Fi and GSM enabled (you must follow on-board procedures for use).

    Travelling with a Partner Airline

     

    If your journey is partly or entirely with a partner airline, your baggage allowance and the restricted items may differ.

    Check the partner airline's allowances and restrictions before arriving at the airport to ensure you can bring your baggage through all parts of your journey and avoid unnecessary delays or fees.
