Committing to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050

We understand the urgency of reducing our environmental impact. That's why we are taking effective and measurable steps both on the ground and in the air. From more sustainable ways to fly to reducing waste in our offices, we're part of the first airline group in the world (IAG) to commit to having net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Here's our roadmap for sustainability and how we are going to reduce our impacts over the short, medium and long term.

In the air

  • Replacing older aircraft with more fuel-efficient aircraft
  • Reducing carbon emissions through more sustainable fuel choices
  • Reducing the noise impact of our aircraft
  • Reducing waste on-board by removing single use plastics and introducing recycling
  • Reducing water consumption.

On the ground

  • Reducing our energy consumption in offices and airports
  • Increasing our use of electric vehicles
  • Reducing water consumption
  • Introducing recycling and waste reduction targets in our offices

Investment in new technology, aircraft and operational efficiency
Achieving net-carbon targets through more efficient aircraft and ways of working.

Switching to sustainable aviation fuel
Reducing carbon emissions by using the latest in sustainable fuels.

Robust Carbon Reduction and Removals
Taking a holistic and detailed approach to reducing our carbon footprint.

We will validate our success through our sustainability management system that holds an IEnvA Registry certification (aligned with ISO 14001). This certificate represents our ongoing commitment to our sustainability journey - building on the steps begun by achieving IEnvA Stage 1 in 2020.

Energy Efficiency

  • Our transatlantic fleet of 23 aircraft now includes eight Airbus A321neo LR which offer a 20% fuel saving versus its predecessor.
  • Its innovative design includes a denser seat configuration while retaining its widebody feel.
  • We have six Airbus A321XLR aircraft on order over the coming years. The A321XLR offers up to 20% fuel burn saving per seat than previous-generation aircraft.
  • Our short-haul fleet includes two Airbus A320 neo aircraft that deliver up to 20% fuel savings and CO2 reduction on previous-generation aircraft. They service high-demand routes including flights between Dublin and London.
  • We were the first airline in Dublin Airport to commence using hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) as an alternative fuel source for our ground vehicles - rolling it out in Summer 2023. Use of HVO compared to diesel reduces CO2 emissions from the production of the fuel by up to 90% and can help improve air quality.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

  • Our parent company IAG, has committed $865m to purchasing SAF over the next 20 years.
  • In April 2021, it became the first European airline group to commit to powering 10% of all flights with sustainable aviation fuel by 2030.
  • In July 2022, Aer Lingus signed an agreement with Gevo to purchase SAF from 2028. The SAF will be used to power our flights from Los Angeles and San Francisco and, it means 50% of the fuel purchased in California will be sustainable aviation fuel.
  • In August 2022, Aer Lingus signed an agreement with Aemetis to purchase SAF from 2026 from San Francisco International Airport. The SAF will be produced at the Aemetis Carbon Zero plant currently under development in Riverbank, California. This plant will be powered by 100% renewable electricity and is designed to sequester CO2 from the production process, significantly reducing the carbon intensity of the fuel.

  • We are the first airline to introduce on-board recycling on short-haul flights into Ireland - trialling in late 2022 and early 2023.
  • Following its success, we rolled out recycling on short-haul flights into Cork and Dublin in Summer 2023.
  • We have set recycling targets of 40% by 2025, in line with our parent company IAG's commitments. To achieve these targets, we need your help on-board to keep your waste separated.
  • We've reduced our use single-use plastics almost 23 tonnes a year by introducing birchwood cutlery packs.
  • We are taking steps to minimise food waste onboard and have set waste-reduction targets to 2025.

  • The Airbus A321neo LR and Airbus A320neo is 50% quieter compared to its predecessor.
  • In 2019, we consistently ranked as one the strongest performing airlines in the UK continuous descent "Fly Quiet and Fly Green" league which results in less noise and fuel burn

  • We are upgrading our ground fleet to electric vehicles. 68% of our light-weight ground fleet is now electric.
  • Our new LED-lit staff car parks reduce energy consumption by 33% versus 2019.
  • We are exploring more energy efficient solutions for our office buildings.

We take our climate action responsibilities very seriously and, as part of IAG, have set an ambitious target of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
